Falcons Collar Lady Bulldogs

LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Andreea Mancha, junior Avalon Munoz and graduate student Alexus Quaadman scored in double-figures as The University of Texas Permian Basin women's basketball team (3-1) beat Southwestern Oklahoma State (2-3) 72-65, Saturday night at Rip Griffin Center.

UTPB jumped out to an early 8-2 lead with 7:28 left to go.  Southwestern Oklahoma State scored seven straight points to go up 9-8 at the 6:29 mark.

From there, the Falcons and Lady Bulldogs traded buckets until there was 4:02 left.  Up 14-13, graduate student Kamryn Lemon hit two free throws to start a run of seven straight points.  UT Permian Basin led 24-18 heading into the second period.

In the second quarter, UTPB led by at least 10 points for most of the period.  SWOSU cut the lead to six, 36-30 by halftime.

Southwestern Oklahoma State got the margin to two, 42-40 with 4:17 to go in the third period.  Munoz hit a bucket to start a 14-2 run by the Falcons to lead 56-42 heading into the final period.

Mancha drained a shot from deep outer space off a fast break to make it 59-42, UT Permian Basin at the 9:44 mark.  The Lady Bulldogs chipped away and got to six, 68-62 with 1:52 to go.  UTPB hit four free throws in the final minute to seal the game.

UTPB was on target from behind the arc hitting at a 50% clip (12-of-24).  The Falcons held the Lady Bulldogs to 32.9% from the floor and 29.3% on 3-pointers and pulled down 35 defensive rebounds to just 14 offensive boards for SWOSU.

For UT Permian Basin, Mancha scored 26 points while shooting 8-of-12 from the floor and 7-of-10 on triples.  Munoz had 11 points, five assists and three steals and Quaadman had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

For Southwestern Oklahoma State, Averi Zinn scored 15 points.

UT Permian Basin opens the home season, Tuesday, Nov. 21 taking on Sul Ross State.  The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
