UTPB Rides Out The Tornado

LUBBOCK, Texas - It was a team effort as The University of Texas Permian Basin women's basketball team (2-1) beat King (0-4) 95-52, Friday afternoon at Rip Griffin Center.  This was the first time since Nov. 14, 2019 that the Falcons scored more than 90 points.

For the first five minutes, UTPB and King traded buckets.  The Tornado got to a 14-8 lead at the 3:12 mark.  Senior Andreea Mancha hit two free throws to end a run of six straight point to tie it at 14 with 2:34 to go in the first period.

Up 25-21 going in the second period, junior Avalon Munoz dropped in a long-range bomb at the 9:52 mark.  That started a run of nine straight points and the Falcons never looked back.

UTPB's defense set the tone.  The Falcons held King to 36.7% shooting from the floor and forced 27 turnovers. UTPB took advantage of the turnovers scoring 39 points.

For UT Permian Basin, sophomore Khiara Flugence had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Munoz had 13 points and six steals while graduate student Kamryn Lemon had 10 points, nine assists and just one turnover.  Double-digit scoring also came from senior Holly Hemmeline, Mancha and junior Morgan Helgesen

For King, Jhayda McKinney scored 10 points.

UT Permian Basin remains on the road, Saturday, Nov. 18 playing Southwestern Oklahoma State.  The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
