UTPB Knocks Down Griffins

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – It was a team effort as The University of Texas Permian Basin men's basketball team (1-1) beat Westminster (Utah) (1-1) 66-54, Saturday afternoon at Behnken Field House.  This was day two of the South Central Region Challenge.

UTPB was on fire the first six minutes of the game.  Junior Maison Adeleye hit a lay-up that put the Falcons up 15-4 with 14 minutes to go.

Westminster went on a 12-2 run to close to 17-16 at the 10:13 mark.  UT Permian Basin pushed the lead to seven, 23-16 with 7:29 left.

The Griffins took the lead 24-23 at the 5:07 mark.  From there, UTPB and Westminster traded buckets. Junior Zy Wright scored with 34 seconds left to put the Falcons up 33-32 at the break.

For the first 15 minutes of the second half, the game was fairly close.  Senior Keyon Craddock knocked down a 3-pointer from the bleachers to make it 59-52 with 3:54 left.  That started a run of nine straight points to put the game away.

The Falcons pulled down 32 defensive rebounds to just five offensive for the Griffins.  They held Westminster to shooting 27.3% from behind the arc.

For UT Permian Basin, Wright had 20 points, eight rebounds and was 8-of-15 from the floor with three triples.  Craddock and junior Alex Matthews had 13 points each and grad student Lathaniel Bastian had 14 points, 14 rebounds, shot 6-of-10 from the floor and blocked four shots.

For Westminster, Chase Potter had 16 points.

UTPB opens the home season, Friday, Nov. 17 playing Sul Ross State.  The game is scheduled to start at 15:00 p.m.
