Falcons Fall To Patriots

TYLER, Texas – Junior April Egwu broke a school record as The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team (17-9, 8-7 Lone Star Conference) lost 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20) to UT Tyler (16-10, 10-5 LSC), Friday night at the Herrington Patriot Center.

In the first set, UT Tyler jumped out to a 15-8 lead and looked to be in control.  UTPB began to climb back in.  The Falcons forced an error to close to 22-21.  The Patriots scored the next three points to end the set.

In the second set, UTT got out 4-0.  Junior Chyra Thompson found the back corner to start a 7-3 run to tie it at 7.  At 11-11, UT Permian Basin scored four in a row to get some breathing room.

UT Tyler climbed back in to narrow the gap to 23-21.  Back-to-back kills from freshman Mya Black and senior Logan Terrazas tied the match at one set apiece.

In the third set, the Patriots were on fire early jumping out 7-0.  UTPB caught their breath and fired out a 13-7 burst to make it 14-13.  UTT went on a 6-2 run to effectively end the set.

The fourth set was a nail bitter the entire way.  Terrazas smashed the ball off the block to cut the lead to one, 21-20.  UT Tyler got four in a row to end the match.

For UT Permian Basin, Terrazas had 10 kills and hit .529 while Thompson had 10 kills.  Junior April Egwu had eight kills, hit. 571 and came away with seven solo blocks.  That broke the school record of six set by Jamie Rodell (Sept. 19, 2012 vs. Southwest).

For UT Tyler, Brylee Peterson had 18 kills and Sophie Connor recorded 14 kills.
