UTPB Rallies To Beat Hardrockers

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Junior Avalon Munoz scored the final seven points as The University of Texas Permian Basin women's basketball team (1-0) charged from behind to beat South Dakota Mines (0-1) 60-55, Friday afternoon at Brownson Arena.  This is the third straight win for the Falcons over the Hardrockers.

For the first four minutes of the game, UTPB and South Dakota Mines slugged it out on even terms.  At the six-minute mark, sophomore Khiara Flugence hit a free throw to pull the Falcons to two, 6-4.

The Hardrockers scored five straight points to go up 11-4 with 4:27 to go.  UT Permian Basin scored the last eight points of the period to lead 12-11 after one period.  South Dakota Mines outscored UTPB 21-13 in the second period to lead 32-25 at the break.

The Hardrockers led by five to 11 points the whole third period.  Down eight with nine minutes to go in the final period, the Falcons began to fire back.

Grad Student Alexus Quaadman hit a tough bucket in the paint at 4:23 to close to a point, 50-49.  Grad Student Kamryn Lemon made a nice move to get a bucket.  That put UT Permian Basin up 51-50 with 4:02 to go.

With 1:06 to go, UTPB and South Dakota Mines were deadlocked at 55-55.  Munoz used her long-distance calling card to hit a triple.  The Hardrockers missed three shots in the final minute.  With two seconds left, Munoz was fouled and hit two free throws to seal the game.

The Falcons held Mines to just 31.7% from the floor and 26.1% from behind the arch.  UTPB scored 19 points off 14 Hardrocker turnovers.

For UT Permian Basin, Munoz had 15 points with two 3-pointers and was 7-of-7 from the line while Quaadman had 10 points, nine rebounds, two steals and blocked three shots. 

For South Dakota Mines, Piper Bauer had 22 points with four triples.

UT Permian Basin keeps to the road, Saturday, Nov. 11 playing Colorado Mesa.  The game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. MT
