Falcons Grind It Out Against Mustangs

ODESSA, Texas – The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team (12-5, 3-3 Lone Star Conference) dug deep for a 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 23-25, 15-8) win over Western New Mexico (4-16, 0-8 LSC), Monday night at the Falcon Dome. 

In the first set, UTPB and Western New Mexico went back-and-forth until 15-14.  The Falcons went on a 4-1 run to lead 19-15.

The Mustangs began to creep back in and closed to 22-21.  Senior Gloria Geurin smashed the ball to start a run of three straight points to close it out.

In the second set, UT Permian Basin stormed out to an 8-2 lead.  WNMU went on a 9-4 burst to narrow it to 12-11.  UTPB appeared to be in control, up 17-12.

Western New Mexico charged back with a 9-1 burst to lead 21-18.  The Falcons gritted their teeth and Geurin found the back corner to make it 23-23.  The Mustangs forced an error and got a kill to even the match.

In the third set, UT Permian Basin and WNMU traded points to 14-13.  Junior Aaliyah Gray stuffed the hitter which ignited an 11-3 rally to finish the set.

In the fourth set, UTPB took a 17-12 lead and looked to close out the match.  Western New Mexico refused to quit and closed to 23-21.  The Mustangs stunned the Falcons with four straight points to force a fifth set.

In the deciding set, tied at 2-2, junior Chyra Thompson blasted the ball off the block.  That started a run of five straight points effectively ending the match.

For UT Permian Basin, senior Logan Terrazas had nine kills and seven total blocks and Geurin had nine kills and 15 digs. Junior Gabby Gregorski had 21 digs.

For Western New Mexico, Naomi Kimball had 17 kills and Maria Osorio had 14.

UT Permian Basin takes to the road, Friday, Oct. 13 playing Eastern New Mexico.  The match is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. MT.
