UTPB Outsprints Greyhounds

PORTALES, N.M. – Four players had double digit kills as The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team (13-5, 4-3 Lone Star Conference) took a hard fought 3-2 (30-28, 23-25, 25-16, 24-26, 15-13) win over Eastern New Mexico (8-14, 0-9 LSC), Friday night at Greyhound Arena.

In the first set, UTPB and Eastern New Mexico went back-and-forth until 10-10.  The Falcons then had four leads of at least three points; only for the Greyhounds to come creeping back in.

Up 24-19, UT Permian Basin saw ENMU reel off six straight points.  UTPB then had set point four times and Eastern New Mexico held on.  At 28-28, junior Chyra Thompson got a kill; then the Falcons forced an error for the win.

In the second set, tied at 4-4, the Greyhounds scored seven straight points.  UT Permian Basin kept chipping away and tied the set at 23-23.  Eastern New Mexico got the next two points to even the match.

In the third set, tied at 11-11, freshman Kennedi Wright had a massive kill that started a six point run to effectively end the set.

In the fourth set, the Greyhounds were rolling, up 16-11.  UTPB refused to quit and went on a 13-8 run.  Freshman Mya Black smashed the ball off the block to make it 24-24.  ENMU picked up the next two points to force a fifth set.

In the deciding set, the Falcons were controlling the tempo the whole way and were up 14-10.  Eastern New Mexico fired back for three straight points.  Senior Logan Terrazas recorded a kill right down the middle to end the match.
