UTPB Throws Everything At Lady Buffs

ODESSA, Texas – Everything was left on the floor as The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team (11-5, 2-3 Lone Star Conference) battled tough in a 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-16) loss to #5 West Texas A&M (15-2, 5-1 LSC), Saturday afternoon at the Falcon Dome.  The Lady Buffs are the defending NCAA Division II national champions.

In the first set, UTPB and West Texas A&M were trading points back-and-forth until 10-10.  Senior Gloria Geurin picked up a kill to start an 8-3 run that put the Falcons up 18-13.

The Lady Buffs chipped away before finally tying the set at 23-23.  UT Permian Basin forced an error and got a kill from junior Aaliyah Gray to close it out.

In set two, West Texas A&M came shooting out to a 14-8 lead to try and put it away.  Senior Stephanie Sanchez smashed the ball off the block.  That started an 8-3 run to make it 17-16, Lady Buffs.

The team traded points after that.  Senior Logan Terrazas found the corner to tie the match at 20-20.  West Texas A&M reeled off five straight to even the match.

In the third set, the Lady Buffs got out quick, 6-2.  UTPB battled back with junior April Egwu notching a kill to close to 13-12.  A 6-1 run by West Texas A&M sealed the set.

In the fourth set, the Falcons and Lady Buffs traded points in the early stages.  UT Permian Basin got a block assist to lead 9-7.  West Texas A&M went on a 13-4 run to effectively end the match.

For UT Permian Basin, Terrazas had 12 kills and hit .414 and Egwu picked up six block assists. Junior Gabby Gregorski had 11 digs.

For West Texas A&M, Torrey Miller had 20 kills and 13 digs and Emma Becker recorded 12 kills.

UT Permian Basin remains home, Monday, Oct. 9 taking on Western New Mexico.  The match is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
