UTPB Sweeps Up Dustdevils

LAREDO, Texas – It was another team effort as The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team (16-6, 7-4 Lone Star Conference) beat Texas A&M International (15-8, 6-4 LSC) 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-23), Friday night at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.

In the first set, UTPB and Texas A&M International slugged it out for most of the set.  Up 19-16, the Falcons forced an error to start a three-point run to take control.

In the second set, UT Permian Basin and the Dustdevils traded points until 10-9, UTPB.  Senior Stephanie Sanchez found the back corner.  That started a 5-2 burst to make it 15-11.

Texas A&M International battled back to take a 21-18 lead.  The Falcons then turned around to go up 23-22.  The Dustdevils managed to tie it back up at 23. Senior Gloria Geurin smashed the ball off the block and then stuffed the hitter to finish the set.

In the third set, several times UT Permian Basin and Texas A&M International would go up by three only to see the other squad come back.

At 13-12, Geurin notched a kill to start a 5-1 run to lead 18-13.  The Dustdevils rallied to close to 24-23.  The Falcons forced an error to take the match.

For UT Permian Basin, Geurin had 11 kills and junior Gabby Gregorski had 18 digs.

For Texas A&M International, Ariana Guerra, Mia Molina and Hannah Thompson had nine kills each.

UT Permian Basin keeps to the road, Saturday, Oct. 28 playing Texas A&M Kingsville.  The match is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
