Falcons Out Strike Rattlers

ODESSA, Texas – It was a slugfest as The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team (14-6, 5-4 Lone Star Conference) beat St. Mary's (Texas) (10-10, 5-4 LSC), Friday night at the Falcon Dome. 

In the first set, St. Mary's jumped out to an 8-4 lead.  UTPB chipped away, tying the set at 18-18.  Junior Gabby Gregorski served up an ace to start a 7-1 run to finish the set.

In the second set, the Rattlers and Falcons traded points until it was 17-16, UT Permian Basin.  UTPB then forced two errors and were never challenged after that.

In the third set, the Falcons charged out to a 10-7 lead.  SMU went on a 10-4 run to lead 17-14.  Junior Aaliyah Gray smashed the ball down the line to start a run of three straight points.

St. Mary's and UT Permian Basin traded points until 22-21.  The Rattlers picked up three straight points to stay alive.  

In the fourth set, UTPB tried to put this one away early, leaping out to a 13-7 lead.  SMU managed to close to 15-13.  The Falcons forced an error and got a block from junior April Egwu to effectively end the match.

For UT Permian Basin, Gray had 18 kills and 10 digs, senior Gloria Geurin had 12 kills and 21 digs and Egwu had 10 kills with seven total blocks. Gregorski had three aces and 19 digs.

For St. Mary's Alicia Virthe had 20 kills and Leah Cruz had 20 digs.

UT Permian Basin remains home, Saturday, Oct. 21 playing St. Edwards.  The match is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
