A 15-point, 6-rebound performance from
Morgan Helgesen along with a 10-point, 5-rebound outing from
Makayla Bingley were not enough to overcome a height advantage that No. 13 West Texas A&M had over UT Permian Basin.
UTPB (6-9, 3-6 LSC) withstood a slow start falling behind 18-5 with 1:43 left in the first quarter to make things interesting with an 11-4 run covering the final 0:46 of the first quarter and 3:37 of the second quarter.
During the 11-4 run, the Falcons got a pair of made free throws from
Alexus Quaadman to end the first quarter then three pointers from Bingley, Helgesen and
Diavian Spencer.
Unfortunately for the UTPB faithful that crammed themselves into Falcon Dome, the 6-point differential would be the closest their team would get the rest of the way as the 13
th-ranked Lady Buffs put the game away in the second quarter with an 18-4 run covering 6:23 of game clock.
It is hard to beat a team that has a distinct height advantage that WTAMU (13-3, 6-2 LSC) does over most of their opponents, but couple that with a shooting performance the Lady Buffs put on during the 18-4 run, going 7-for-7 from the field, 3-for-3 from long range and 1-for-1 from the charity stripe.
The Falcons were still playing as hard as they could and would eventually string together an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough in the eventual 81-54 final.
