ODESSA, Texas – When two players earn double-doubles and a third is one rebound away, you know you've had a successful game and that is exactly what UT Permian Basin head women's basketball coach
Rae Boothe got out of her Falcons in a 78-58 victory over Cameron University.
The win by the Falcons meant both teams have the same overall record at 7-9 and the same conference record within the Lone Star Conference at 4-6. UTPB earned its first West Division victory to improve to 1-5 while Cameron dropped to 2-4 in the West.
Trailing 6-3 less than 90 seconds into the game, UTPB roared back in front of a raucous crowd inside the Falcon Dome by going on a 15-2 run spanning 5:43 of game time for an 18-8 lead with 1:41 left in the first quarter.
Morgan Helgesen started and finished the run with makes from beyond the arc and
Holly Hemmeline added five points during the run as well.
The game was never in doubt after that as both teams played fairly evenly with the glaring exception of the Falcons using their height to outrebound the Aggies and earn a greater amount of second chance points.
UTPB had a rebounding advantage of 28-13 at the half and 49-31 at the end of the game. The 18-rebound advantage helped the Falcons outscore the Aggies 20-3 in second chance points.
Helgesen, a 6-foot-1, sophomore forward from Denton, led all scorers with 17 points and added 10 rebounds for one of the double-doubles. Helgesen was also accredited with three assists, a block and a steal.
Alexus Quaadman also earned a double-double for the Falcons as the 6-foot-1 junior post from Las Vegas, Nev., poured in 14 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and an assist.
Avalon Munoz, who had an outstanding set of numbers in the first half with 13 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal, finished the contest with 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists and a steal.
Hemmeline would complete the game with 12 points to go along with 11 from
Makayla Bingley.
Katie King (11 points) and Karley Miller (10) led the way for the Aggies as the only to double-digit scorers for Cameron.
