Normally stuffing the stat sheet in other ways,
Avalon Munoz and
Alexus Quaadman filled the scoring column Thursday night for UT Permian Basin Women's Basketball. The duo each scored 17 points as the Falcons went down to the wire with Lubbock Christian. Quaadman added nine rebounds to the effort while Munoz had five.
Morgan Helgesen also had a good showing with 12 points and 11 rebounds for her second career double-double.
The defenses for both sides were locked in in the early going. After trading points back-and-forth, it took nearly seven minutes of game time for either side to crack 10 points. The Lady Chaps had some momentum early with a run of free throws, but Quaadman's put back beat the buzzer to keep the Falcons within four. The visitors hit a pair of threes to open the second frame and push their lead to 10 but the Falcons responded. Five points from Helgesen as part of a 12-2 Falcon run tied the score at 21. The Lady Chaps closed the half strong though and took the lead into the locker rooms at 35-27.
Threes by Munoz and
Kamari Portalis brought the Falcons back into the game in the third quarter and moments later a free throw by Helgesen gave the Falcons a 38-37 lead. A three-pointer by the visitors gave them a little wiggle room but the Falcons kept pace at the charity stripe. Quaadman closed the quarter with four straight made free throws and went into the final frame trailing 46-44. The Falcons once again tied it early in the fourth but the visitors responded with a 10-2 run to take the lead. Both teams combined for 23 free throws in the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough for the Falcons to comeback in the 73-60 final.
