Making just her second collegiate tournament appearance,
Arnie Taguines did what no player in UT Permian Basin Women's Golf has ever done before, win an event. The freshman used a late surge to finish the RJGA Shootout at Estrella at -4 (140).
Taguines entered the day tied for the lead with Sydney Williams of Arkansas – Fort Smith at -3. Both players played to even par over the first 13 holes before Taguines fell behind on 14. She'd bogey while Williams birdied the par 3 to go up by two shots with just four to play. Taguines was unfazed, recording birdies on holes 15 and 16 while Williams' bogey on 15 put her back at E for the day. Now with a one-stroke lead Taguines parred the last two holes to clinch her spot as the outright tournament champion.
Anaya Perales and Arnie Varet also had strong showings. Perales tied for 10
th place at +3 (147) for the tournament. The sophomore was consistent all week, making 25 pars and was a leader on the course in that category. She was also tied at -3 for the lowest score on par 5s. Varet was one shot in back of Perales to finish tied for 13.
Keixa Lopez shot a 164 over the two rounds while
Madeline Condron finished at 165 to round out the Falcons. Competing as an individual,
Marina Solis shot a 180.
As a team the Falcons finished fourth at +13. Just six shots separated the top four schools which included Lone Star Conference rivals Arkansas-Fort Smith and UT Tyler.
The Falcons are back at it next Monday at the Golf Club of Dallas in the West Regional Preview. Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
