UT Permian Basin Swim and Dive started their 2022-23 the right way at the Sam Freas Invitational. The men's team placed second while the women finished third. Both team's trailed only host Oklahoma Christian while Division I North Texas won on the women's side.
Trevor Heath and Richard Gutierrez had strong showings for the men with Heath scoring 33 points while Gutierrez scored 30. The freshman duo of
Emma Gerhart and
Camille Bouvarel led the women's team with 30 and 26 points respectively.
Axel Torres Hecker was the first Falcon with a top three when he did so in the 100 breaststroke. Heath placed third in the 50 freestyle with teammate Isaac Velasquez finishing right behind him. Gutierrez took second in the 200 breaststroke and was closely followed by
Ivan Torres Lopez and
Matthew Newman. Heath had a close call in the 100 freestyle, but was just beat Caleb Musser who's time set a new event record.
Gerhart took second in the 500 freestyle and finished within striking distance of Kaylyn King of North Texas.
Niklas Heelein followed her performance up with a third place performance in the men's event. The men capped the event with a third place finish in the 200 freestyle relay while the women finished fifth.
