Strength Through Sacrifice: David Charles Reflects on Black History Month

2/19/2026 11:30:00 AM

Faith plays a central role in how David Charles reflects on Black History Month. A junior at UTPB on the swimming and diving who is working toward a Bachelor of Science in Human Performance, Charles sees the month as a time to recognize resilience, sacrifice, and the opportunities built through perseverance.

"Black History Month to me means taking the time to recognize and honor the resilience of African Americans in the past," said Charles. "It's about the sacrifices that created opportunities, which reminds me of the Lord's sacrifice for everybody!"

Charles' connection to Black history began at a young age through education and meaningful experiences. Growing up, he participated in several Black history events in school, including a moment that left a lasting impact.

"I participated in many black history events in school, and I was a part of a small group of 5th graders that got the chance to go to Washington D.C for the Million Man March!"

An influential scripture that continues to guide Charles comes from Galatians 3:28: "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

At UTPB, Charles values the sense of belonging and support that surrounds him both academically and athletically.

"I love the close-knit community here, how helpful and supporting the leadership at the school is, and our athletic facilities," he said.
