UT Permian Basin Volleyball's
Daylee Doggett led the game in offensive and defensive categories in Saturday's four-set loss to Dallas Baptist University. The junior defensive specialist was clutch after the attack, finishing with a game-high 15 digs. She was also big on the serve, totaling a game-best five aces.
The Falcons opened the first set with a service ace from
Netanya Allison before an attack error made it 2-0. After a DBU kill,
Taurie Magee answered with one of her own and
Daylee Doggett followed with an ace for a 4-1 advantage. The Patriots took their first lead at 6-5 and used an 18-7 run to go ahead 24-12. UTPB cut to 10 with a late 4-0 answer that included a pair of aces from Doggett, but DBU took it by a 25-16 score.
It was the Patriots scoring the first three of the second set before the Falcons came back with the next three for the early tie. DBU took the lead back with a kill, but UTPB responded with four in a row. It included three Patriot attack errors and an ace from
Devin Alcoser for a 7-4 advantage. The Falcons continued to hold the lead, upping it to 14-9 on an ace from
Maya Detwiler. DBU used a 5-0 answer to notch the second set at 14-14.
Aquincia Strambler then started a 3-0 run with a kill and finished it with an ace for a 17-14 lead. The Patriots came back to tie it 19-19 before
Mayce Barker made it 20-19 with a kill. The set saw four more ties down the stretch, but it was the Patriots taking it 25-23.
The Falcons erased an early 3-0 deficit in set three with a 7-1 run. Magee coupled two kills and a block with a
Stephanie Sanchez kill to help UTPB to a 7-4 lead. DBU quickly responded with a 5-0 answer for a 9-7 advantage. Sanchez ended the run with a kill and then served an ace for a 9-9 tie. Tied 12-12, UTPB took a 14-12 lead on kills from
Cassandra Rother and
Logan Terrazas. They later upped their advantage to 21-15 with back-to-back kills from Strambler and Barker. The Patriots chipped away with a 5-0 answer, cutting the Falcon advantage to 21-20. Tied 23-23, Strambler's kill got UTPB within one of taking the set before Rother finished it off with a solo block to force a fourth set by a 25-23 score.
DBU took control with an early 5-1 lead. Terrazas answered with a kill, but the Patriots upped their lead to as many as nine at 18-9. The Falcons cut it to 19-13 with a kill from Barker and a block from Rother, but the Patriots finished on a 6-2 run for a 25-15 final and four-set win.
Strambler led the Falcons with eight kills and added 10 digs.
Doggett led the game with 15 digs and five aces.
Alcoser had a team-high 14 assists and added eight digs.
UTPB next travels to San Angelo to start conference play against Angelo State on Saturday, September 17.
