Picking right up where she was last season,
Aquincia Strambler had a monster day with 33 kills. She had 14 in the opening match against Eastern New Mexico and followed it up with a 19-kill performance against Southeastern Oklahoma. The Falcons totaled 23 aces on the day as well as they swept the first day of the Iceman Invitational.
The Falcons took control of the first set early, flexing their offensive muscle. Kills by Strambler,
Mayce Barker, and
Taurie Magee set the pace early.
Devin Alcoser kept the momentum rolling with a four-point run on the serve including an ace to start pulling away from the Greyhounds.
Stephanie Sanchez was also clutch on the serve, winning five points to pull away 25-18.
The Falcons picked up where they left off in the second set with an early 4-1 lead after three Greyhound errors. The teams traded blows before a 5-2 Falcon run put them in front for good and the two-set lead. The Greyhounds made things interesting by taking the third set followed by a six-point lead in the fourth. Some sloppy play by the Greyhounds let the Falcons back in it. With the score tied at 17, a Strambler kill sparked a 7-0 run to seal the match.
Game two of the day was much more closely contested. The Falcons cruised in the first two sets with identical 25-12 scores. After Southeastern Oklahoma came back to tie the match at two sets each, the Falcons started the decisive set fast. They charged out of the gate to take an 8-2 lead, but the Savage Storm fought back to make it a one-point game. An error by the Savage Storm ended their chances as the Falcons took advantage of the late point to stay ahead for good and the victory.
Taurie Magee had 15 kills along with 13 blocks on the day. Strambler added seven blocks, as did
Logan Terrazas.
Daylee Doggett paced the defense with 39 digs.
The Falcons are back in action tomorrow against Augustana at 1 p.m. before closing the tournament against Southwest at 5 p.m. Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
