UT Permian Basin set a new single season program record with three home runs in Friday's Lone Star Conference series opener against No. 25 Lubbock Christian. The Falcons hit three home runs on the day, giving them 48 for the season, breaking the previous record of 45 back in 2008.
The teams will play two seven-inning games on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Falcons' bats came alive early. After
Michael Clapperton led off with a walk on a 3-2 pitch,
Garret Thornton homered to left center. Later in the inning,
Devin Ferrari doubled to left center and subsequently stole third base. Then, with two outs,
Gabriel Morin homered to center, giving UT Permian Basin a 4-0 lead at the end of the first.
After Lubbock Christian scored one run in the bottom frame, the Falcons' starting pitcher,
Trey Penny, held the Chaparrals scoreless in the bottom of the second – despite having allowed two baserunners.
Lubbock Christian struck for a four spot in the bottom of the third, added five in the fourth, seven in the fifth, and one in the sixth.
Morin delivered his second extra-base hit of the game with a double to begin the top of the sixth. He came around to score the Falcons' fifth run when Clapperton delivered an RBI single to center field.
Ferrari hit UT Permian Basin's third homer of the day, and his second extra-base hit of the game, when he drove a first-pitch offering over the left field wall, the last run of an 18-6 run-rule Lubbock Christian victory.
