There was plenty of offense to go around on Sunday as UT Permian Basin and Eastern New Mexico combined for 20 runs in their series finale in Portales. Three Falcons had multi-hit games but it was
Bernie Valdez who made the most impact at the plate. The freshman had two hits, drove in a pair, and scored twice.
It was Valdez who got the Falcon offense going in the fifth. After they loaded the bases with one out, Valdez doubled home a pair to get them on the board. He came around to score along with
Marcus Johnson two batters later on a single by
Garret Thornton for a four-run inning.
The Falcons scored again in the seventh when Valdez scored on a sac fly by
Oswaldo Godina. The Falcons got some help to rally in the ninth after they started the inning with two walks and a hit batter.
Pedro Astacio and
Cole Dickie drove in two with back-to-back singles.
J Raul Lopez reached on an error to plate two more and put the go-ahead run on base. It wasn't enough as the rally ended there in an 11-9 final.
Astacio and Dickie also had two hits while eight of the starting nine had a hit.
Caleb Vuono was impressive striking out four and allowing just one hit in 1.2 innings.
The Falcons return home to face the University of the Southwest on Tuesday at Momentum Bank Ballpark in Midland. Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
