Game Recap: Baseball |

Berg Goes the Distance in Gutsy Extra Inning Win

For the second straight day there was extra baseball between UT Permian Basin and Eastern New Mexico but this time the Falcons came out on the right side.  Trever Berg threw all eight innings as the Falcons overcame a two-run deficit to beat the Greyhounds 6-4.  Berg struck out seven and threw 124 pitches to earn his first victory of the season.

The offense started slow but got going on a solo home run off the bat of Oswaldo Godina in the second.  In the fourth with the score tied at one, Godina singled home J Raul Lopez to give the Falcons the lead.  Heading into the seventh though, the Greyhounds took a 4-2 lead.

Cole Dickie walked, Caleb Vuono singled, and Gabe Melendez walked to load the bases with Falcons.  Michael Clapperton walked to score the first run before Garret Thronton brought in another on a ground ball to tie the score and force extras.

Devin Ferrari was plunked to open the eighth inning and moved to third after a single by Godina.  Pedro Astacio singled him home and Jay DeSoto followed with a sac fly to go up 6-4.  Berg came out for the eighth and pitched around a pair of singles to induce a ground out for the win.

The opening game of the day was full of offense as the Falcons plated 12 runs.  Ferrari opened the scoring with a solo home run to left center.  The Falcons got another run in the fourth on a single by Clapperton to score Godina.

The team poured it on in the fifth.  Ferrari brought home another run with a single and came around to score on a two-run double by Astacio.  After loading the bases, Gabe Morin worked a walk for the fourth run of the inning.  Just two pitches later, Garret Thornton tripled down the right field line to clear the bases and give the Falcons a 9-5 lead.  Despite Marcus Johnson's two-run double in the sixth, the Falcons couldn't hold onto the lead in the eventual 15-12 final.

The Falcons had seven extra base hits while five Falcons had multi-hit games.  Thornton, Ferrari, Astacio, and Johnson all had multiple RBI.

The Falcons look to split the series in the finale tomorrow in Portales.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 PM CT.  Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
