Long Ball Leads Falcon Offense in Series Opener

Early in the season UT Permian Basin Baseball has relied on the long ball and got two more on Friday.  The Falcons racked up six extra base hits and 10 hits total in their series opener at Eastern New Mexico.

The Falcons got their offense going in the third.  Cole Dickie started things with a single and moved to second on a bunt.  Michael Clapperton singled to center to score him for the first run of the day.  In the fourth, J Raul Lopez doubled home Devin Ferrari for the second run of the evening.

Jay DeSoto kept things going in the fifth with a two-run home run.  Ferrari drove home Gabe Morin later in the inning for a three-spot.  Ferrari added to his evening with a two-run shot in the seventh to keep the Falcons in the ball game.  Trailing 8-7 entering the eighth, the Falcons got some help from Greyhound pitching who couldn't find the plate.  Five walks, four of them in a row with two outs, pushed the Falcons into the lead.  An error in the eighth allowed the Greyhounds to tie the score which eventually went into extra innings.  In the 12th the Greyhounds walked it off for the 10-9 final.

Clapperton finished with three hits to lead the Falcons.  Ferrari had four RBI in the effort.  The Falcons only allowed four earned runs in the game.  Joel Vasquez had another strong outing out of the bullpen throwing two shutout innings and struck out three.
