Anderson Retiring from Coaching after 27 Years

11/8/2022 4:35:00 PM

After two years at helm for UT Permian Basin Tennis, head coach Stan Anderson has announced his retirement.

Anderson, coached for a combined 27 years at the high school and collegiate level.  Anderson took over the UTPB Tennis program in 2020 after coaching at Eastwood High School in El Paso for 25 years.

"We'd like to thank Stan for his tireless work with UTPB Tennis," said Director of Athletics Todd Dooley.  "The program has embodied our pursuit of comprehensive excellence in the classroom and on the courts the last two seasons, having one of the highest GPAs as a program and reaching the conference playoffs."

Anderson engineered a major turnaround of the women's program in just two seasons.  After winning just four matches in 2021, they won nine in 2022 and reached the Lone Star Conference playoffs by winning their final two matches of the year.

He led the men to the postseason in each of his seasons, winning 13 dual matches.  Last season the Falcons started strong winning seven of their first nine matches.  This season Takumi Katsuda had a strong fall reaching the finals of the ITA Championships in Wichita Falls.

Anderson's teams excelled in the classroom.  In his time 38 student-athletes earned ITA All-Academic recognition and last season Enrique Sanchez was named the Lone Star Conference Academic Player of the Year.

"Not everyone goes through life getting to say they got to work their dream job, mine was coaching college tennis," said Anderson.  "I'll miss the day to day interactions with the student-athletes the most. I'm grateful for the opportunity the University gave me and am looking forward to retirement."

Before jumping to the collegiate ranks, Anderson was a highly successful high school coach at Eastwood High in El Paso.  There he won 418 matches and sent 17 athletes to the college level.  He won three team district titles, four boy's district titles, three girl's district titles, 15 individual district champions, 10 state team championship appearances, and compiled a career .731 winning percentage.

A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.  Steve Buck will take over the program as the interim head coach.  Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
