Falcons Score Four in Ninth for Walk-Off Win in Series Opener

UT Permian Basin started off the weekend on the right foot, capping off a four-run ninth inning for a walk-off victory over St. Edward's.  After giving up the lead in the top of the ninth, the Falcons rallied for four and won the game on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing Jojo Allen to score from second in the 10-9 win.

Pemron Burrows started the scoring for the Falcons by singling through the left side to bring in Colin Fabio.  Michael Clapperton followed Burrow's single with one of his own, scoring Cole Dickie for the second run of the inning. Jay DeSoto also singled through the left side bringing in Peyton Koopman to tie the game a three. The Falcons took the lead on a Nick Hernandez walk and expanded their lead on a catcher's interference call for to go up 5-3 after just two innings of play.

The game remained 5-3 Falcons until the seventh, when Allen lifted a sacrifice fly scoring Garret Thornton for a three-run lead. The Falcons surrendered six runs in the top of the ninth to give the Hilltoppers an 8-6 lead, but the Falcons rallied in the bottom half of the frame.

DeSoto walked and Thornton singled to start the rally.  Hernandez doubled to right center to score DeSoto and cut into the deficit.  Allen then singled to right to bring in Thornton and pinch runner Torren Brozovich to tie the game at nine. With one out, Dickie hit a one hopper to the pitcher, who threw the ball into centerfield allowing Allen to score for the walk-off win.

In game two of the doubleheader Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Clapperton in the first as the Falcons trailed 4-1 after one inning. Hernandez homered to right in the third inning scoring DeSoto to close the gap to 5-3. The Falcons final runs came in the sixth on a single through the right side by Hayden Matthewson scoring J Raul Lopez and Devin Ferrari.  Falcon pitching couldn't slow down the Hilltopper offense and fell 13-5.

Clapperton, DeSoto, Burrows, Dickie, Godina, Lopez, and Hernandez all had multiple hits on the afternoon.  Hernandez carried the offense with five RBI between both games, while Allen had three.

Trever Berg had one of his best starts of the season, going seven innings allowing three runs and striking out four Hilltoppers. Austin Lee picked up the win in relief, pitching one third of an inning and escaped a ninth inning jam.  Caleb Vuono and Jeff Thoben each did not allow a run in their relief appearances. Vuono pitched 1.2 innings while Thoben pitched the final two innings.
