UT Permian Basin Men's Tennis capped off a week of Lone Star Conference play with a resounding win over Dallas Baptist, 6-1.  The men nearly had the clean sweep taking all three doubles matches and all but one in the singles.
 
The Falcons cruised early to take all three doubles matches.  They continued in the singles as they only dropped the No. 6 spot in a third set tiebreak.  Enrique Sanchez slammed the door with a 6-3 win in the third set in the No. 1 singles spot.
 
"It started with the No. 2 doubles team of Aditya Iyer and Paul Schwieger as they blanked DBU 6-0," said Head Coach Stan Anderson. "That set the tone for the rest of the day.  We continued to roll in singles winning at the two through five spots. The guys played really focused today and it showed. I am proud of Jorge (Garcia). He has been battling an injury and he played his best tennis of the year in the second set against his opponent."
 
On the women' side they fell 7-0 but not without some close matches.  The duo of Lore Mewis and Lea Mjertan easily took their match 6-1, but the Falcons couldn't hold on to take the doubles point.  In singles, Monika Cantu forced a tiebreak in the second set and nearly took it at 7-5.
 
"The women's team is improving all the time, and this was evident in the doubles," said Anderson. "The team of Mewis and Mjertan made quick work of their opponent, just playing together for the second time in a match. Once again it was the depth of our lineup that made us competitive. Olga Guillamon fought to a tiebreaker in the first set before falling. Monika Cantu showed why she is the teams toughest player. She pushed her opponent to the max before falling. Monika is improving so quickly. She is one of our hardest workers and she is playing the best tennis of her career."
 
The Falcons opened the weekend against nationally ranked Midwestern State.  The women started off with Mewis and Mjertan nearly taking down the top doubles team from the No. 17 Mustangs.  The Falcons also got contributions from Cantu who pushed a second set tiebreaker and Guillamon who nearly pulled off the upset at the six spot.
 
"Lore and Lea were tied at 3-3 before dropping the set 6-3," said Anderson. "This was the first time Lea and Lore played together outside of practice and I felt like they had good energy and were close to beating a nationally ranked team. Olga Guillamon made her first appearance of the spring and showed a great fight by battling to a 4-4 tie in the second set before dropping the set 4-6. We are battling some injuries and having to play people out of position, so I am happy with the effort. MSU showed why they are a nationally ranked team."
 
The men also faced a nationally ranked Mustang team who came into the match at No. 19.  Aditya Iyer played a very competitive match before falling in a first set tiebreak.  Jorge Garcia fell in straight sets but also forced a tiebreak in the second set.
 
"Our first serve percentage was not what it needed to be to win against a nationally ranked team," said Anderson. "The guys were disappointed about the doubles but determined to get back into the match in singles play. That was the best match Aditya played all year. He was within a few points against a nationally ranked player but had a couple of bad breaks at critical times. It was one of those days where shots that we normally make didn't go our way."
