4/10/2021 10:44:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UT Permian Basin Men's Tennis picked up a crucial win Saturday defeating Western New Mexico 5-2 in Lone Star Conference action.  On the women's side things were tightly contested, but the Falcons fell 4-3.

For the first time in conference play the Falcon women took the doubles point.  The duo of Lore Mewis and Lea Mjertan cruised to a 6-1 victory before Anaya Singh and Monika Cantu, playing together for the first time, squeaked out a 7-6 win.  The singles portion of the day was a close one, with three matches going into the third set.  Mjertan came out victorious in three sets after trailing 4-1 in the decisive set, while Cantu took her match in two sets.  The Mustangs were able to take the other four matches for the win.

"Anaya and Monika left it all our on the court today and stepped up to win big points for us," said Hed Coach Stan Anderson.  "Lea stepped up and accepted the challenge today. Her determination gave us a chance to win the match.  We were missing several players today and the girls made a commitment to work as hard as possible. Even though we did not win the match I think we matured as a team and we will be able to use this experience to push us to get to where we want to be."

The men started the day by taking the one and two doubles matches to secure a point.  The duo of Aditya Iyer and Paul Schwieger improved to 4-1 on the season with their win in the No. 1 spot.  Iyer also improved to 4-1 in singles play, taking his match in straight sets.  Schwieger earned a straight set win, as did Jorge Garcia and Hector Flores for the match victory.

"We had a little difficulty dealing with the altitude in some of our matches, but the guys played very smart and efficient today," said Anderson. "Aditya is showing outstanding senior leadership. He is working extremely hard, and it shows in his performance. Having him on the team this year is like having an extra coach."

The Falcon women are back in action tomorrow at Bush Tennis Center against Texas A&M – Kingsville while next up for the men is a road trip to New Mexico State next Saturday.  Download the UTPB Athletics App to stay up to date on all your favorite Falcon teams.
