The UT Permian Basin Baseball bats were hot Sunday, combining for 21 runs in a doubleheader against the University of the Southwest.
Jay DeSoto and
Devin Ferrari had big afternoons. DeSoto had three hits including two doubles and a pair of RBI. Ferrari hit his second home run of the season and now has nine RBI on the year.
The Falcons cruised in the opening game of the day, jumping on Mustang pitching for seven runs in the first inning.
Nick Hernandez got things going with a two-run single, followed by a two-run double off the bat of
Oswaldo Godina.
Cole Dickie brought in Godina with a single of his own for the 5-0 lead. The Falcons added the last two runs in the inning on a
Garret Thornton walk and a wild pitch.
The Falcons added another run in the fourth without recording a hit. They loaded the bases on three walks before a walk to Dickie brought home a run. The offense got back on track in the sixth. The Falcons once again loaded the bases, this time for
Torren Brozovich. His single to left brought in a pair. He was followed by a two-run single by
Michael Clapperton for the 12-1 lead. DeSoto capped off the game with a double to left center giving the Falcons the 13-1 lead they'd hold onto for the victory.
In game two it was Hernandez getting things going once again with a two-run single in the first. The Falcons added another pair on a double by Ferrari, who came in to score on the play thanks to an error by the first baseman. DeSoto added a run in the fourth on a single for the 5-1 lead. Falcon pitching struggled in the top of the fifth, allowing 10 runs to fall behind.
The offense kept the Falcons in the game. Ferrari hit a solo home run in the bottom half of the fifth to make it an 11-6 game.
Pemron Burrows singled to center in the seventh to bring home a pair but that's as close as the Falcons could get falling 13-8.
Jake Rohde was brilliant once again in the first game, allowing just one run over five innings and striking out six.
JD Martinez and
Brayden Williamson finished the game with a 1-2-3 inning each.
Luis Dominguez allowed just one run in four innings in game two.
Andre Leyva threw 1.1 scoreless innings, while Martinez made another appearance going two innings without allowing a run.
