UT Permian Basin Tennis blew by McMurry on Saturday in Abilene, with the men and women combining to take 15 of a possible 18 points. The women cruised winning 8-1 while the men won handily 7-2.
The women opened the day by sweeping the three doubles matches. The #1 doubles team of
Lore Mewis and
Krystal Smith easily won 8-2. The other two matches were closer but the #2 team of
Anaya Singh and
Lea Mjertan and the #3 team of
Sofia Rischmagui and
Monika Cantu took their matches by two points. They also took five of the six singles points. Singh, Smith,
Maria Briones, Rischmagui, and Cantu all took their matches in straight sets.
"The women really took care of business today by sweeping all three doubles," said Head Coach
Stan Anderson. "They challenged us in doubles, but the team was unfazed. We have worked hard on our doubles play and it showed today. The wind was a big factor in today's matches, but everyone was able to fight through the conditions and take care of business. The women are getting better all the time and am happy with the progress they are making."
The three men's doubles matches were all closely contested with the Falcons taking two of the three. The duo of
Enrique Sanchez and
Bjorgvin Juliusson won their match in tiebreaker fashion, as did the duo of Lorenzo Oliveira and Fernando Siquiera. It was nearly a clean sweep in the singles portion with the Falcons taking five of six matches. Sanchez battled back after dropping the first set in the #1 position.
Paul Schwieger, Oliveria, Mathan, and Juliusson all took their matches in straight sets.
"The men started slow in doubles and were down on all three courts early," said Anderson. "The guys won a couple of key points and the momentum shifted in our favor.
Paul Schwieger and Lorenzo Lopes kept the momentum going with their singles wins.
Enrique Sanchez was able to seal the victory with a comeback win. It was a gut check win for the guys. They just refused to lose today."
