The UT Permian Basin Baseball offense made a statement at Cameron Thursday, scoring 24 runs to sweep the doubleheader. The Falcons outscored the host Aggies 24-7 and now go for the series sweep tomorrow.
In game one the Falcons put up a five spot on the Aggies in the top of the first. Colin Fabio drove in
Michael Clapperton on a single to left to start the scoring.
Jay DeSoto then walked with the bases loaded to bring home Fabio for the Falcons to gain a 2-0 lead.
J Raul Lopez singled to right field scoring
Garret Thornton and
Nick Hernandez to go up 4-0 and
Pemron Burrows launched a sacrifice fly to center scoring DeSoto to put the Falcons up 5-0 after one. After three unanswered runs by the Aggies in the first and second innings the Falcons answered back in the third on a Clapperton double to left center scoring
Cole Dickie and Lopez to increase their lead to 7-3.
The Aggies would get one back in the bottom of the seventh to make things interesting, but it was answered by a three-run home run to right by Thornton to plate Clapperton and Fabio to give the Falcons a six-run lead. The Falcons added one more run in the ninth as Dickie hit a double to right field and later scoring on the play because on an error to give the Falcons an 11-4 victory.
Trevor Berg got the start for the Falcons and went seven innings striking out nine Aggies in his best start of the season.
Clay Thompson came in relief facing three batters and striking out two while
Trey Penny faced minimum in the ninth.
Dickie went a perfect 3-for-3 in the game scoring twice. Fabio, Thornton, and Lopez all had two hits on the afternoon. Clapperton, Fabio, Thornton, and Dickie all crossed the plate twice. Thornton led the offense with three RBI with Clapperton and Lopez right behind him with two.
Game two started off the same way for the Falcons jumping out to a big lead early.
Devin Ferrari got the offense going in the second with a single up the middle scoring Lopez and Jay Desoto to go up 2-0 in the top of the second. In the third inning, DeSoto walked scoring Fabio to go up 3-0.
Torren Brozovich reached on a fielder's choice scoring Thornton and Fabio to lead 5-0. The Falcons added one more run on a Ferrari sac fly plating DeSoto to take a 6-0 lead after three.
Cameron answered back with one run in the bottom half of the frame, but the Falcons kept scoring. Desoto lasered a double down the left field line scoring Hernandez, Thornton, and Clapperton to clear the bases and give the Falcons an eight-run lead. DeSoto later scored on a Brozovich fielder's choice to give the Falcons a 10-1 lead. In the fifth, DeSoto once again walked with the bases loaded to put the Falcons up 11-1. In the seventh, Lopez singled to right scoring Thornton for the 12-3 advantage. The Falcons scored their final run on a Lopez single down the left field line bringing in
Oswaldo Godina for the 13-3 victory.
Spencer Cofer pitched five innings collecting the win and striking out seven.
JD Martinez,
Ed O'Bannon III and
Luis Dominguez combined for four hitless innings of relief while striking out five.
Lopez collected four hits while Ferrari added two. Thornton and DeSoto both scored three times with Hernandez and Fabio scoring twice. DeSoto drove in five runs along with Ferrari driving in three and Lopez bringing in two.
