Jada Berry continued her breakout campaign Wednesday night, scoring a career-high 19 points in a crucial Lone Star Conference victory over UT Tyler. Berry had it working from deep, knocking down four threes and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. The Falcons used a consistent attack, as 10 players scored in the 67-52 victory.
The Falcons (5-9) got early points from the charity stripe, with five of their first seven points coming off free throws. The Patriots (0-9) cut into the early Falcon lead but back to back layups from
Morgan Helgesen and
Karyssa Jackson boosted the lead.
Rory Carter pushed the lead to nine with a three and Jackson brought it to double digits with a jumper. Berry knocked down her first three of the evening, extending the lead to 21-9.
Jackson pushed the led further with an early bucket in the second quarter. Back-to-back Patriot baskets cut into the led but the Falcons answered right back.
Bri'An Washington hit a three and
Alexus Quaadman hit a pair of free throws to bring the lead back to double figures. Carter and Berry continued to push the lead further with consecutive threes.
Lauren Stallworth's layup with six seconds in remaining in the half sent the Falcons into the locker room up 40-26.
Berry opened the second half with another three. They continued to pour it on with a three from Carter and a jumper by
Nokoia White to lead by 21. The Patriots made things interesting with a run of their own to close the quarter to cut the Falcon lead to 10. Any chance of a comeback was stopped by six fourth quarter points by Quaadman and the staunch Falcon defense only allowing seven points in the final quarter.
Quaadman came up just short of another double-double with eight points and nine rebounds. Carter finished with nine points and five assists off the bench. The Falcons controlled the paint outrebounding the Patriots 35-29 and scoring 16 points in the paint.
The Falcons are off this weekend before returning home to take on Angelo State with action starting at 5 p.m. Thursday night. Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
