UT Permian Basin Women's Basketball got huge nights from
Avalon Munoz and
Alexus Wykoff in their home opener against St. Edward's. Munoz led the Falcons in multiple categories including scoring a career high 20 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds along with shooting 7-for-13 from the field (54 percent). Wykoff had 18 points while collecting three steals.
Both offenses scored in the first minute and a half of the game. Wykoff put the Falcons on the board with two made free throws. The Falcons ended the first quarter on an 8-3 run to trail 17-14.
The second quarter was the same story as the first. Both teams traded baskets until the Hilltoppers went on a run in the middle of the quarter. The quarter was ended by a 10-2 run from the Falcons including a last second three by
Morgan Helgesen to make it a one-point game at the half.
The Falcons started the third quarter with a three-pointer from
Avalon Munoz. After the three it was all Hilltoppers who stretched the lead to 15.
The Falcons had comeback on their minds as they got as close as two points after starting the quarter on a 13-5 run. With 19 seconds left they trimmed the lead to one on a pair of free throws by Munoz but that's as close as they got as they fell to the Hilltoppers 63-61
Along with Munoz and Wykoff having big nights Helgesen went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc recording nine points. The Falcons out rebounded the Hilltoppers 46-42 and they committed one less turnover than them as well.
