After the offense struggled to find a rhythm early,
Suddin Sapien provided a spark in relief at quarterback. The freshman threw for 186 yards and two touchdowns in the second half. The Midland native found
Jordan Smart on both scores and were the first two of Sapien's collegiate career.
The Falcon offense struggled to move the ball in the first half against Texas A&M – Kingsville, only able to cash in on a pair of
Michael Mayfield field goals. Late in the third quarter the Falcon offense finally got going with Sapien under center. Trailing 26-6, the Falcons drove down the field 92 yards. Sapien found
Kobe Robinson on a 37-yard catch and run before connecting with Smart from 31 yards out for the first touchdown of the day.
It was Sapien to Robinson once again that sparked a long touchdown drive, this time in the fourth quarter. They connected on a 28-yard pass that set up a 10-yard score to Smart. The Falcons then recovered the ensuing onside kick with under two minutes to play. Sapien connected with
Marcus Molina on a 34-yard crossing route.
Carson Roberts knocked home a field goal to cut the Falcon deficit to 29-22. The ensuing onside attempt was executed perfectly but landed just half a yard out of the out-stretched arm of
MJ Link allowing the Javelinas to milk the remainder of the clock.
The duo of
Nathan Tilford and
Kevin Young Jr. combined for 111 yards on the ground. Robinson had a team-high 94 yards receiving. Molina led the team with seven catches for 72 yards. Smart finished with six catches for 60 yards and the scores.
John O'Kelley had himself a day with eight tackles, 2.5 for a loss, a sack, and forced a fumble.
