UT Permian Basin Women's Basketball got back in the win column on the strength of a strong third quarter to take the lead and eventually win 65-60 at Texas A&M - Kingsville. The Falcons dominated the boards, outrebounding the Javelinas 42 to 28, including 19 offensive rebounds.
Lauren Stallworth got the Falcons (2-3) started with a jumper and
Nokoia White hit a jumper and a three-point basket to give the Falcons a 7-5 lead early in the first. Both sides traded baskets, but neither was able to get much momentum heading into the second quarter.
To start the second quarter, the Falcons scored six-straight points on the strength of baskets from
Karyssa Jackson and Stallworth. Once again neither side was able to get much momentum but it was the Javelinas (2-3) that went into the half with the 33-28 lead.
The Falcons found the scoring touch in the third quarter as they went on a 7-0 run midway through the period. The run was started by
Ally Haman, then a
Kim Best three-pointer and layup put the Falcons down two. To end the third, the Falcons took the lead with eight straight points.
Ogechi Nwodo scored the first two baskets of the run then
Morgan Helgesen knocked down a jumper.
Alexus Quaadman finished the run two free throws to give the Falcons a 50-48 lead heading into the final quarter.
The final quarter was an offensive struggle for both teams until the Falcons ended the game on a 6-2 run with clutch free throws from
Avalon Munoz, Jackson, and
Chaunta Thomas to hold on for the win.
Best and Helgesen led the Falcons with nine points each. Jackson led the team with seven rebounds and Munoz dished out a team high six assists.
The team is back in action tomorrow afternoon against the Javelinas with tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m.
