Jordan Horn saved his best for last Friday night, scoring 15 of the last 17 UT Permian Basin points in regulation, then calmly buried what became the game-winning three in overtime, stunning No. 11 Dallas Baptist. The upset is the second consecutive upset of the No. 11 team in the country for the Falcons, who knocked off No. 11 St. Edward's last Friday on the road. The win is the team's second consecutive upset of a ranked DBU team in as many years.
With the Falcons (8-6) trailing for nearly the entire night, Horn caught fire in the final six minutes. Down seven, Horn sank a free throw to start his run. The Patriots (9-2) hit back-to-back layups to push their lead to 10 with just over four minutes to go.
Horn started the comeback with back-to-back threes to trim the deficit to four. After a DBU layup, he converted a three-point play to make it a one possession game.
Quinntez Grimes hit a layup and got the Falcons to within one with 1:44 remaining. The Patriots went for the dagger and missed a three and Horn immediately answered with one of his own, to put the Falcons up 87-85, giving them their first lead of the game since leading 3-2. Horn hit a jumper with 15 seconds left to put the Falcons back ahead, but the Patriots answered to send the game to overtime.
Trevion Lamar opened the scoring in the extra period with a jumper, that was immediately answered by the Patriots. After the Patriots took the lead, Lamar put them back ahead with a layup. The Falcons tried to pull away when
Brandon Burrell buried a three from the wing, his only made field goal of the night, to go up two. The Patriots responded with another three of their own to go back in front. It was Horn who played the hero, responding with a three in the corner to put the Falcons up 99-97. Two defensive stops later the Falcons had pulled off the upset for the second time in as many weeks.
Horn finished the night 6-of-12 from long range in the win. Grimes finished with a career-high 21 points along with eight rebounds. Lamar scored 15 points with five rebounds and five assists.
Adam Rivera scored 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds. The senior reached 500 rebounds for his collegiate career and moved into 6
th place in UTPB history.
The Falcons and Patriots square-off tomorrow at 5 in the second of their two-game series. The Falcons look to make it three-straight wins over No. 11.
