Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jones Sets, Grimes Matches Career-High Against No. 7 Team in the Country

Making his first start of the season, sophomore Fermandez Jones exploded for a career-high 20 points while freshman Quinntez Grimes matched a career-high with 16 as UT Permian Basin welcomed No. 7 West Texas A&M to Odessa.  It wasn't enough despite the Falcons shooting 57.9 percent from the field as a team as they fell 108-85 to the Buffs.

The Buffs (4-1) started hot, taking a 10-point lead just moments after the tip.  Threes by Adam Rivera and Jones along with a pair of Trevion Lamar layups brought the Falcons (6-4) back into the game.  After a basket by the visiting team, a layup by Jones followed by a steal and dunk by Grimes tied the score and forced a timeout.  Momentum swang back in favor of the Buffs, going on a 20-2 run out of the timeout.  The Falcons continued to battle behind some hot shooting and cut the deficit to just 11 heading into the locker room and keeping the game within striking distance.  Jones hit a three early in the second half that cut the deficit to 10, but that's as close as the game would get as the No. 7 Buffs pulled away in the second half.

Lamar and Jones led the offense with 20 points each.  Lamar added in team-highs with eight boards and four assists.  Jones broke his previous career-high of 18 which he set last year against the Buffs at home.  Grimes got his 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting and also grabbed three steals.  Off the bench Adam Rivera had six points and seven rebounds.  Jay Workman finished in double figures for the third time this year, scoring 10 in the effort.

It's a quick turnaround for the Falcons as they head to Canyon on Saturday to square-off with the Buffs with tip-off scheduled for 4 PM.
