The terrific Falcon freshman had another strong performance Saturday as the Falcons went down to the wire with Arkansas Fort Smith.
Holly Hemmeline was once again the team's high scorer, dropping 17 points along with seven rebounds.
Alexus Quaadman was again a force in the post, scoring nine points with eight rebounds and four blocks. The freshman already set the program record for blocks in a single season, but now has 28 over her last nine games. Their efforts weren't enough as the Falcons fell 73-63.
The Falcons (9-14) dominated the first five minutes as they jumped to a 12-0 lead. Hemmeline and
Yazmin Batch had five points a piece in the burst. The Lions (12-10, 8-7) chipped away at the Falcon lead, but a
Jada Berry lay-up with 30 seconds left put the Falcons on top by seven after a quarter. Both offenses were stiffled in the second quarter, including a nearly five minute stretch where they combined to score only three points. The offenses picked up the pace late, but a 5-0 Lion run sent them into the locker rooms ahead by one.
A 7-0 Lion run to open the second half pushed their lead to eight, but the Falcons answered back. A basket by Batch, followed by a pair of Galindo free throws cut the deficit to eight. Hemmeline added a three and
Rory Carter scored on a lay-up to cut it to one. After a Lion three, Hemmeline calmly hit another to answer. Threes kept the Falcons in the game, as the Lions tried to pull away. Hemmeline and
Kristian James drained shots from long range to keep the Falcons within striking distance. In the fourth the Falcon defense allowed them to climb back into the game. After the Lions pushed the lead to 11 early in the quarter, they chipped it down to a four-point game with just under a minute to play. That was as close as they'd get, after free throws and a turnover ended their chances.
Batch ended in double figures with 10 points with six rebounds.
Kayla Galindo had a game-high seven assists while Carter added four of her own. Off the bench
Jordan Rogers had seven points while James added six.
The Falcons are on the road next week as they take on St. Edward's in the first of a three-game road trip.
