Hollly Hemmeline continues to close in on the UT Permian Basin Women's Basketball freshman scoring record after scoring a team-high 16 at St. Edward's. With 324 points, Hemmeline sits just 23 behind Tammy Acosta's record of 347 points as a freshman. The Falcons got double digit scoring performances from Kayla Galindo and Yazmin Batch but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Hilltoppers 78-62.
The Falcons (9-15, 6-12) scored first after the Hilltoppers (14-9,10-8) were assessed a pregame technical. Galindo took advantage of that and made both free throws to give the Falcons a 2-0 head start and once things got going, Hemmeline hit a three-pointer to give the Falcons a 5-0 lead. The Hilltoppers came back strong, eventually taking a four-point lead into the second quarter.
In the second quarter the Falcons tied up the game 24-24 on a 9-3 run on three-pointers by Batch, Hemmeline, and Rory Carter. The Hilltoppers slowly gained momentum to close the half and the Falcons trailed heading into the locker room 34-29.
Another run for the Falcons in the third quarter was a 6-2 run at the end of the quarter. A couple of free throws made by Carter and Batch along with a lay-up from Alexus Quaadman brought the Falcons back within nine as they trailed 51-42 with 18 seconds left in the third.
The Falcons made a run in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter, closing the gap on a 9-2 run. Batch and Quaadman hit a couple of free throws followed up by a Lauren Stallworth lay-up and a three-pointer by Kristian James to bring the Falcons back trailing 70-58. The Falcons could not complete the comeback as they fell as the Hilltoppers held on down the stretch.
Galindo finished with 11 points, while Batch added 10. Quaadman led the team with eight rebounds and three blocks, while adding eight points.
The Falcons will be back in action on Saturday with a Lone Star Conference match-up against St. Mary's.
