It took all 40 minutes and heroic performances by some upperclassmen, but UT Permian Basin Men's Basketball squeaked out a 104-102 barn burner to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Trevion Lamar scored 35 points with nine rebounds while
Jordan Horn added 26 points as the Falcons erased a 12-point halftime deficit to the Aggies (0-3).
Neither team wanted to give an inch in the first half. For much of it, the lead was no larger than five as both sides went back and forth exchanging baskets. The Aggies grabbed momentum and a seven-point lead, but had it immediately erased after a technical foul allowed Horn to hit a pair of free throws and give the Falcons the ball. Right after the Falcons went on an 11-0 run and looked like they had snatched all momentum after a Horn three-pointer. But it was the Aggies who closed the half strong. After the Falcons led 40-35, the Aggies closed on a 20-3 run and took a 55-43 lead into the half.
The Aggies pushed the deficit to 14 early in the second half, before the Falcon offense stormed back. Free throws by
Malik Brikat and four points from Horn brought the Falcons to within single digits. Lamar went to work on the offensive end with the Falcons still trailing. He scored eight points as part of a 16-2 Falcon run to retake the lead. The 12-point deficit was gone in just under five minutes of game time. A three by
Wesley Hayes pushed the lead to five and that's as high as it'd get for a while. The teams continued the trend of the first half of exchanging blows with neither side having much momentum. While the Aggies were able to tie the score on two occasions, they were unable to take the lead. Up just four with a minute to go, a three-point play by Horn sealed the deal as the Falcons hung on for the win.
Lamar did most of his work from the charity stripe, going 16-for-19 from the free throw line, just two off the school record. Along with his nine rebounds, Lamar found his teammates with a team-high five assists. Horn had 19 of his 26 points in the second half and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
Jay Workman was efficient from the field finishing with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Hayes continued a strong start to his freshman year with 11 points. Brikat also finished in double figures with 10 despite playing with foul trouble.
As a team the Falcons shot an astounding 66.7 percent from the field in the second half and were 17-of-18 from the free throw line in the half.
These teams will wrap-up the 2020 portion of the schedule tomorrow at 1 PM. The Falcons will then be off for the holidays before returning to action in 2021.
