Senior guard
Pat Dembley became the fifth member of the 500 points in a season club Wednesday night. Dembley reached the milestone at the 14:27 mark in the first half, knocking down a three. He joins Johnnie Lacy, Daeshon Francis, James McPherson and
Jacob Ledoux as the only players in program history to reach the milestone in a single season. The senior finished the night with 30 points, giving him 525 for the season, the fifth most in a season in program history. Dembley needs just three points to move into fourth place in single season scoring. Despite Dembley's efforts the Falcons (14-9, 7-7) fell in a closely contested battle to Eastern New Mexico 89-83. Â
The teams exchanged blows early but it was the Greyhounds (6-12, 6-7) who were able to grab momentum early with a 7-0 run to go up by 10. Three
Pat Dembley threes and an
Adam Rivera layup knotted things right back up at 20. After a Greyhound bucket, Dembley connected on his fourth consecutive three giving the Falcons a 23-22 lead. The Greyhound slowly took control, eventually taking a a 10-point lead into the final minutes of the first half. Dembley wouldn't be denied, cutting the lead in half on his own but the Greyhounds hit a three at the buzzer to go into the half 46-38 in favor of the Greyhounds.
The Falcons came out shooting threes in the second half. They hit five straight threes, two from
Malik Anderson, two from
Fermandez Jones and one from
Adam Rivera. A
Miles Washington jumper broke the streak of threes but the Falcons lead 56-51. A 7-0 Greyhound run but them back in front and from there the teams traded the lead back and forth. All it took was a 5-0 run by the Greyhounds to take the lead for good as they kept just enough of a cushion down the stretch to stay in front until the final buzzer.
Dembley added nine assists, five rebounds and four steals to go along with his 30 points on 10-of-21 shooting. Washington finished with 16 points along with seven rebounds and two blocks. Jones was the only other Falcon in double figures with 11 points, hitting three threes.
The Falcons are back in action Saturday as they go for the upset of #3 West Texas A&M in Canyon.Â
