UT Permian Basin Volleyball once again had its grit and determination show Saturday afternoon as the Falcons rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win the final two sets in a 3-2, 25-22 18-25 23-25 25-19 15-11 victory on the road at Lubbock Christian.
The Falcons used a big rally early on in the fourth set, scoring six straight points to take a 9-6 lead with a pair of aces by
Erika Lozano.
Lubbock Christian rallied in the fourth to take a 17-14 advantage, but UTPB tied the set at 17-17 on kills by
Stephanie Sanchez,
Isela Murillo and
Analise Lucio. Following a service error by the Falcons, UTPB picked up the next three points for the 20-18 set lead.
The Falcons rattled off the last five points of the set, winning 25-19 on a kill from
Aquincia Strambler to force a decisive fifth set.
Leading 8-5 in the abbreviated final set, Lubbock Christian rallied to pull back in the lead at 9-8 on a four point rally.
UTPB took back the lead after back and forth scoring on a kill by
Grace Talbert to lead 12-11, and the Falcons scored the next three points on a pair of errors and a block by
Skyler Friel and Strambler.
"Today was another tremendous team effort with great defense from both teams," said head coach
Tim Loesch. "LCU battled back from behind in the third set and forced us to play our best the rest of the match. I'm really proud of our team for finishing strong in games four and five to pick up the victory."
Talbert led the Falcons with 10 kills on the day, while fellow freshman
Stephanie Sanchez had nine kills with Strambler also adding nine winners in the match.
Travana Matthews had a match-high nine blocks on the day, backed up with eight blocks by Friel and seven from Sanchez.
Lucio had 25 assists to pace the Falcons, and
Marissa Aguilar had a team-best 17 digs on the day.
The Falcons make the quick turnaround in two days, hosting Western New Mexico in a 1 p.m. matinee.
