UT Permian Basin Volleyball improved their record to 7-1 on the season with a come-from-behind five set victory over Pittsburg State. The Falcons are off to their best start since the program joined the NCAA. Isela Murillo led the Falcon attack with 16 kills while Travana Matthews and Skyler Friel also added double digit kills.
The Falcons trailed early, falling behind to the Gorillas (5-3) 4-0 right out of the gate. The Falcons countered with a five point run of their own to take the lead in the first set. After trading points the Falcons would start to pull away with a run of five points and three points to take the first set 25-22. The second set the Falcons once again got off to a slow start, trailing 5-1. The teams would trade points but the Falcons couldn't tie the game. They'd get within two points but by then the Gorillas just traded points to end the set 25-22 in favor of the Gorillas.
Both teams opened the third set exchanging points before a run by the Gorillas put them up by four. A five-point Falcon run, with three Gorilla errors, eventually put them in the lead. The Gorillas answered pulling away and eventually winning the set 25-20.
Down two sets to one, the Falcons came to life dominating the fourth set 25-13. Twelve Gorilla errors helped the Falcons build a lead, while Murillo had a stretch of three consecutive kills. She'd finish the set with four kills while Aquincia Strambler added three of her own.
The Falcons opened the decisive fifth set with a run to lead 6-2. The Gorillas battled back cutting the lead to one, but the Falcons answered to push the lead to 14-10 and match point. Not backing down the Gorillas scored three straight points, but Murillo slammed home her final kill of the game to take the final set 15-13 and the match.
Kiera Granado had a sensational day setting up her teammates with 26 assists while Analise Lucio added in 20 assists of her own. Sarah Vasquez led the team in digs with 19, while Murillo had 11 and Granado and Megan Ashton had 10.
The Falcons are back in action Tuesday as they hit the road and head to Hobbs, N.M. to take on University of the Southwest at 7 p.m.
