Barker Breaks Out as Falcons Sweep Yellow Jackets, Bulldogs

Freshman Mayce Barker had a breakout Friday night for UT Permian Basin volleyball, helping the Falcons to a sweep on the day in a pair of 3-0 shutouts of Black Hills State and Southwestern Oklahoma State at the Chap Classic in Lubbock, Texas.

Barker, a freshman Outside Hitter playing in just the second match of her college career, came out in the second match of the day to lead the Falcons with 12 kills in a 25-15, 25-15, 25-15 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State. Barker hit .440 on the afternoon and helped the team hit .309 overall while holding the Bulldogs to just .019 on the day.

Newcomer Isela Murillo also stepped up big in the nightcap, adding 10 kills with just one error to hit .360.

Murillo and Barker each had three blocks while Travana Matthews had a team-best four to go with four kills on .308 hitting.

Sarah Vasquez led all players in the match with 17 digs, while Analise Lucio had a match-high 21 assists.

It was another freshman leading the Falcons earlier in the day. Freshman Outside Hitter Stephanie Sanchez had a team-high nine kills Friday morning while hitting .240 to lead UTPB past Black Hills State 25-21, 25-15, 25-17.

The Falcons held the Yellow Jackets to .015 on the attack as BHSU committed 28 errors to just 30 kills. UTPB had 34 winners to 11 errors, hitting .198 on the match.

Lucio had 19 assists and 11 digs on the morning, leading all players in assists, while Megan Ashton had a team-best 13 digs in the three-set contest.

The Falcons close out the weekend Saturday afternoon, taking on Pittsburg State at 1 p.m.
