Walk-Off Caps Doubleheader Sweep

After coasting to a 13-4 win in the first game of a double header, UT Permian Basin needed to come-from-behind in the second game to win 10-9 in walk off fashion sweeping the day against Eastern New Mexico.  The Falcons have now scored in double figures in four straight games and have scored in all but three innings against the Greyhounds so far this weekend.  It is the first series victory in conference since the Falcons joined the Lone Star Conference.  Tylor Frailey continued to stay red-hot going 4-5 with five RBI and a pair of triples over both games.

The Greyhounds (12-15, 0-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after scoring on a wild pitch.  The Falcon (12-16, 3-4) offense went to work in their half of the inning starting off with a bang.  Pemron Burrows got things started with a lead off double and Frailey followed with a triple to right center field.  Skyler Palermo brought Frailey in on a ground ball to take the lead.  Gabriel Melendez then smashed a laser over the left field fence for his third home run of the year and a 3-1 Falcon lead.  A single drove in a run for the Greyhounds in the second inning but the Falcons answered with a sacrifice fly to push their lead back to two.

The Falcons would completely take control in the third with a two-out rally.  Andres Romero drove in Peyton Koopman, who reached on a walk, for the first run of the inning.  Back to back walks loaded the bases for the top of the order.  Burrows smacked the first pitch of the at bat into left field for two more runs.  Frailey followed with a triple into the right field corner for two more runs and the lead was 9-2.  They would add an insurance run in the fourth on an error before scoring three more in the fifth on a Tyler Vlasek three-run home run.  The Greyhounds scored a pair in the top of the sixth.  Zeroes would follow for the 13-4 final.

Game two was a thriller in a back and forth affair with the Falcons having to come-from-behind three times before walking off as winners.  The Burrows and Frailey tandem continued to terrorize Greyhound pitching reaching on a hit by pitch and a walk to open the game.  With them on second and third and two-out, Jonathan Bermudez singled to left field for a pair of RBI and an early 2-0 lead.  The Greyhounds got on the board with four runs on three hits in the second to take the lead.  In their half of the inning the Falcons had runners on the corners and one out, but a line-drive double play ended the rally.  Trailing for the first time all weekend, the Falcons chipped away at their deficit.  They'd get a run back in the third on a fielder's choice making it 4-3.

Another rally in the fourth put the Falcons back out in front.  With two-out and runners on the corners, Frailey came through once again with an RBI-single to tie the ballgame.  Palermo followed with another single to retake the lead at 5-4 heading into the fifth.  In the fifth the Greyhounds scored three runs including a two-run double with two outs.  A dropped pop-up in the bottom of the fifth lead to another Falcon rally.  William Bierlein tripled down the right field line to bring in Bermudez to make it 7-6.  Andrew Donovan tied the score once more with an RBI single and it was seven all.

The tie was short lived as the Greyhounds put together three hits to bring in two runs and go back up 9-7 in the sixth.  Again the resilient Falcons had to comeback.  Back to back singles to open the sixth started the rally.  Bierlein came through again with an RBI-single bringing the Falcons within a run.  A ground ball should have ended the inning there but a throwing error allowed Melendez to score and tie the ballgame again at nine.

In the seventh, the Greyhounds thought they had scored the go-ahead run.  With runners on first and second shortstop Paul Tapia hit a slow ground ball for an infield single.  Malcolm Smith tried to score from second on the throw to first but a perfect throw by Bierlein and a perfect tag by Bermudez nailed him at the plate to preserve the tie heading into the bottom of the inning.  The Falcons rallied quickly with back to back singles by Donovan and Burrows.  Frailey would be intentionally walked setting the stage for Palermo.  On a 1-0 pitch, Palermo lofted the ball into deep left field allow Donovan to score easily and the 10-9 final.

"I was really proud of the guys today in the second game having to comeback multiple times," said Head Coach Brian Reinke.  "The guys stuck through the tough weather conditions and had the mental strength to pull out both games."

Ivan Thomas was the winner in the first game tossing five innings and striking out seven.  Joshua Gonzalez picked up the win in game two with 1.1 innings of shutout relief.  Alex Rivera started the second game and struck out six in 4.2 innings.

Frailey was unstoppable going 4-5 with two triples and five RBI on the afternoon.  This comes after a 4-5 day with three RBI in yesterday's 22-5 blowout victory.  Burrows, Palermo and Donovan had three hits each on the afternoon, with Burrows and Palermo picking up a pair of RBI.  Melendez, Bierlein and Oslovar also added a pair of hits.  The Falcons combined for 23 hits with only three of the 18 starters not picking up a hit.  Nine different Falcons had at least an RBI between the two games.

The Falcons look for their first series sweep since 2016 tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Roden Field.
