For the second time in as many days, senior Sklyer Palermo homered at Angelo State on Saturday, this time in the first game of a double header. It wasn't enough as the Falcons would fall in game one 5-3 and 11-0 in game two.
The Falcons (9-15, 0-3) got things started quick in the first game.
Pemron Burrows singled for the first base runner of the game. Palermo followed with a two-run home run to left field, his third of the season, giving the Falcons the early 2-0 lead. The Falcons struck again in the top of the second inning on
Gabriel Melendez's second home run of the season to make it 3-0 Falcons. The next three batters reached base, all with no outs, to load the bases but the Rams (22-5, 3-0) would get out of the jam without allowing the Falcons to score again.
That was all the offense the Falcons would get in the game. The Rams cut into the Falcon lead with a pai of runs in their half of the second inning and took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. A home run in the sixth gave the Rams an insurance run. In the seventh, a walk to
Tylor Frailey and a Burrows single brought the tying run to the plate for the Falcons but they couldn't capitalize for the 5-3 final.
The second game was all Rams as they held the Falcons to just two hits over seven innings in the 11-0 final. The Falcons were held to just six baserunners.
Palermo homered for a team-leading third time this season, all in the past seven games. He also had a six-game extra base hit streak snapped in the second game of the double header. Over those six games he had the three home runs and five doubles. The home run by Melendez was his second of the year and now gives him 11 RBI in just 12 games.
Burrows led the rest of the offense with three hits on the day while scoring a run. Melendez and
Tyler Vlasek each had a pair of hits.
Nick Bartley had the best showing on the mound allowing a run in 2.2 innings of work in game one.
These teams wrap-up their weekend series tomorrow at 1 p.m. before the Falcons return home to play Eastern New Mexico in Lone Star Conference action.
