Palermo Stays Hot in Series Opener at Angelo State

After being named Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week, Sklyer Palermo continued to swing a hot bat in the Falcons conference opener against No. 23 Angelo State.  The senior would go 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI but it wasn't enough as the Falcons would fall 16-5.

The Rams (20-5, 1-0) would strike early with a lead-off home run.  They would continue in the second inning with a six-run outburst.  Palermo would get the Falcons (9-13, 0-1) on the board with a solo home run to left center field.

"He really helps our offense run the right way when he's in a groove.  We know that we can count on him to drive in runs," said Head Coach Brian Reinke of Palermo, who now has 10 hits over his last five games.  In this streak Palermo has seven extra base hits, seven RBI and seven runs scored.

The Ram bats would not quit adding three in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the sixth to expand their lead.  In the seventh the Falcons would fight to strike for three runs.  Andrew Donovan opened the frame with a single and was driven in on an RBI-double by Tylor Frailey.  Then with two outs, Palermo drove in Frailey with a single.  A triple by Jonathan Bermudez brought home Palermo to make it 16-5 but it was as close as they'd get for the final.

Palermo and Bermudez each had a pair of hits and combined for three RBI.  Pemron Burrows also had an RBI on a single in the fifth inning.  Burrows also stole his 14th base of the season, tying him for fifth in the Lone Star Conference.

These teams will resume their weekend series tomorrow with a doubleheader with the first game slated for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
