Palermo Breaks Out with Three Hits in Doubleheader Vs No. 8 Buffs

Skyler Palermo broke out of an early season slump with three hits over both games of the doubleheader between UT Permian Basin and No. 8 West Texas A&M.

Despite the cold temperatures at game time, the Falcons (5-8) would get off to a hot start in the first game.  After escaping a bases loaded jam, the Falcons would make two quick outs in their half of the first.  Tyler Vlasek would blast a double off the left field wall before Andres Romero would drive him in with a single.  Trent Golson would pick up his first hit of the year and Palermo would drive in Romero with a single of his own for a 2-0 lead.  The Buffaloes (16-3) would add a run in the top of the second after an error extended the inning.

The Falcons would add to their lead in the third after an error allowed Golson to cross the plate.  The lead would not last much longer when the Buffaloes would take the lead after a three-run home run by Kyle Kaufman.  The Buffaloes would add an insurance run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to make it a 7-3 ballgame.  Coming off the bench, Jonathan Bermudez would homer, his first of the year, but it was as close as the Falcons would get for the 7-4 final.

Game two didn't start as well for the Falcons as the Buffaloes scored on the third batter of the game on a sac fly.  They would add another two runs in their half of the second.  The floodgates would open in the third inning as the Buffaloes would strike for nine runs, this after they stranded 16 runners on in the first game.  Luis Dominguez would come in and throw three shutout innings of relief in the 14-0 final.

Krisjon Segleski took the loss in the first game while Ivan Thomas took the loss in the second game.  Palermo finished the afternoon 3-7 with an RBI along with a triple in the second game.  Dalton Castillo and Hayden Matthewson added in doubles to the effort.

These teams resume their weekend series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
