Saturday's doubleheader between UT Permian Basin and Tarleton State came down to the wire with both games being decided in the final inning. The Texans (10-15) would take both games but not without drama in the late innings.
Skyler Palermo continues to stay hot picking up four hits on the afternoon.
The Falcons (8-12) would start from behind in the first game. After back to back hits, the Texans took the lead just two batters into the game. Another run would come in on a sacrifice fly making it 2-0. Starter
Alex Rivera would escape the jam getting a strike him out, throw him out double play to end the inning. The Falcons would strand a runner on second with no outs in their half of the inning before both pitchers would get into a grove.
Tyler Vlasek would the offense going in the fifth with a lead-off single. He would advance to second on a wild pitch.
Tony Oslovar would follow with an RBI-single getting the Falcons on the board. With Oslovar on third,
Pemron Burrows reached first on a ground ball after the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag to tie the ballgame. In the top of the seventh, the Texans would rally scratching across a run on Rivera who had dominated since the first inning. In their half of the inning the Falcons would get runners on first and second but couldn't push a run across for the 3-2 final.
Game two would start similarly with the Texans pushing a run across in the top of the first inning. The Falcons would answer back with a triple from
Tylor Frailey and a double off the bat of
Peyton Koopman to tie the game at a run a piece. In the second and third innings the Falcons would get runners in scoring position but would be unable to score. In the fourth the Texans would retake the lead with a pair of runs on three hits to take a 3-1 lead. Palermo started another rally in the fifth working a one-out walk and advancing on a wild pitch. He would later score on
Hayden Matthewson's two-out single. After a walk loaded the bases,
Andrew Donovan was hit by a pitch to score the winning run. In the seventh, the Texans would strike for two more runs on two hits after a leadoff walk. The Falcons would get a pair of hits in their half of the inning but one was erased on a double play resulting in the 5-3 final.
Palermo continued to stay hot barreling up the ball for four hits including three doubles. Frailey had three hits on the afternoon including a triple. Rivera was dominant in the first game. After allowing hits to the first two batters, he didn't allow a hit until two outs in the seventh while striking out nine.
Tomorrow is the series finale and the final game for the Falcons before they jump into conference play on the road next week against Angelo State.
