UT Permian Basin got a tremendous pitching performance holding No. 8 West Texas A&M to just two runs, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons fell 2-0.
The Falcons (5-6) faced a steep task at keeping the Buff's (14-3) offense at bay which is one of the best in the nation. The Falcons had a chance to strike first when they had a runner on third with just one-out in the first inning. They would be unable to capitalize, while the Buffs would score in their half of the second. After a lead off walk, Justin Martinez would drive a run in for the 1-0 lead. A golden opportunity arose in the third for the Falcons when they loaded the bases with one-out, but a ground ball double play ended the rally. A double play would get the Falcons out of the same jam in the top of the fourth, and they'd get another double play to end the top of the fifth.
The Buffs would push across another run in the sixth to make it a 2-0 ballgame. The Falcons had one last chance in the seventh inning getting two on but couldn't push a run across. Falcon pitching stranded 13 Buffs and held Clay Koelzer, the third leading hitter in the Lone Star Conference riding a 16-game hit streak, to an 0-5 day, striking out twice and stranding four base runners.
Matt Williams took the loss allowing one run in his first appearance of the season.
Cale Thornton lowered his season ERA to 1.46 in 2.1 shutout innings. He now has a 6.2 inning scoreless streak over his last four appearances.
Jake Rohde was also brilliant allowing just one run over four innings putting his season ERA at 1.32.
Nick Bartley pitched a clean ninth to finish for the Falcons.
These two teams resume their weekend series tomorrow with a double header with first pitch slated for noon.
