Box Score UT Permian Basin got big games out of its starting lineup Thursday night as three players scored over 20 points and
Adam Rivera added 17 while shooting perfect from beyond the arc as the Falcons opened their final regular season weekend series with a dominant 102-92 win over Texas A&M Commerce at the UTPB Gym in Odessa.
The Falcons weathered an early six-point Commerce lead when
Isaiah Hammons scored seven points in 39 seconds. The junior guard hit a layup, took a steal down for a fast-break dunk, and answered a Texas A&M Commerce bucket with a 3-pointer for a 30-26 lead.
UTPB later used an eight-point run to break away from the Lions.
Maurice Walton hit layups on consecutive possessions followed by a pair of baskets by
Xavier Ledet for a 42-33 lead.
The Falcons led by as many as 12 points in the first half, and ended the first with that lead on a layup and and-one by
Miles Washington with 25 seconds remaining to go on top of Commerce 54-42.
Rivera and
Jacob Ledoux carried the UTPB offense after the break. Rivera hit four 3-pointers in the second half for 12 points, and Ledoux scored 17 of his game-leading 24 in the second half, hitting on a pair of 3-pointers. Ledet added nine points and six rebounds as UTPB led by as many as 20.
The Lions made a game of it in the final minutes, closing within four points after hitting three 3's in 52 seconds to close within 96-92.
The Falcons hit their free throws when they needed to the most, sinking their last seven foul shots of the night in the 10-point win.
"We played very well offensively tonight," said head coach
Josh Newman. "We really shared the ball was well as executed the game plan. It was great to see such balanced scoring. Offensively we've been pretty good all year, and if we can click on defense we will be a tough opponent in the conference tournament."
Rivera ended the night a perfect 6-6 from the field, and an even more impressive 5-5 from 3-point range with seven rebounds.
Ledoux had 24 points with three 3-pointers to go with three steals and four assists. Ledet had the game's only double-double, scoring 20 with game-high 11 rebounds. Hammons ended the night with 20 points and seven assists.
The win locks the Falcons into the 7th seed in next week's Lone Star Conference Championships in Frisco, Texas. Saturday will play a large part of determining their opponent as Commerce and Angelo State are tied at 12-5 in second place in the league with one final game remaining.
