UT Permian Basin men's basketball has a chance to clinch a spot in the Lone Star Conference Championships this week with a road win over Texas A&M – Kingsville or Angelo State.
The Falcons enter action at 6-8 in the conference, tied for sixth with Texas A&M – Kingsville, two wins above Cameron and MSU Texas who are tied for eighth. Last week the Falcons picked up two huge home wins over Cameron and MSU Texas, who each only have two games remaining.
Jacob Ledoux continues to carry the Falcon offense with a Lone Star Conference leading 18.1 points per game. On the season Ledoux has 435 points and is just 65 away from becoming the fourth player in program history with 500 points in a single-season.
Xavier Ledet continues to have a strong season and is fifth in the conference averaging 7.5 rebounds per game while averaging 10.7 ppg. Ledet also has recorded a double-double in two of his last three games.
Miles Washington has also come on strong over the last eight games. Over those eight he has scored in double figures five times including two 19 point outbursts and scoring 18 once.
Texas A&M – Kingsville comes in on a five game losing streak, all to the top five teams in the conference by less than eight points. Last week the team dropped a pair of tough road games. First a 76-72 loss to Eastern New Mexico then a heartbreaking 90-89 loss in overtime against West Texas A&M. The Javelinas use a balanced attack on offense with only Darius Mickens scoring more than 10 points a game at 10.5 ppg. Robert Stevenson leads the team in rebounding with 7.4 rebounds per game. When these teams played a month ago the Falcons carried a 12 point lead into the half but the Javelinas chipped away eventually pulling away with free throws for the 80-72 final.
Angelo State sits third in the conference at 9-5 after dropping both games last week to Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M. Sitting fifth in the South Central Region, the Rams are led by Ronald Bell with 13.0 ppg and 7.2 rpg. Antonio Singleton, Daron Mims and Kiair Crouch are also averaging double figures for the Rams. When these teams played a month ago it was a back and forth affair. The Falcons trailed by three with under a minute to go but couldn't get a stop on the defensive end for the 95-91 final.
The Falcons will clinch a spot in the Lone Star Conference Championships with a win or losses by Cameron or MSU Texas who are off this weekend. The Falcons wrap-up the regular season next week at home against Texas A&M – Commerce on Thursday and Tarleton State on Saturday. For more information go to utpbfalcons.com.
